CLOSED: 6-week Mindfulness in Adolescent Education Course

Time: Thursday, 4:00pm-6:00pm

Location: Salt Institute, 561 Congress Street, Portland, ME

Course Description:

This 6-week course will focus specifically on adolescent-age appropriate implementation of mindfulness curriculum. It will incorporate practice time, reflection, modeling, and collaborative group work to illustrate the personal and classroom benefits of mindfulness practice. Throughout the course, participants will build their own personal practice, create short lessons based on weekly content, and envision a plan for implementation. Participants will leave with a local professional learning community around mindfulness, so they can continue to communicate at the completion of the course.

Objectives:

  • Define mindfulness and explain the current research
  • Explain the basic structure and function of the brain and nervous system and how that supports the need for and benefits of mindfulness
  • Practice a variety of mindfulness techniques and develop a personal practice
  • Develop a personal toolkit of mindfulness practices for students and generate a unit plan for implementation
  • Build a professional network of mindfulness educators to share best practices, feedback, and resources

Requirements:

  • Attendance is mandatory.
  • Daily personal practice with reflection
  • Weekly Reflections
  • Reading from Learning to Breathe
  • Implementation Plan for school year

1.2 CEUs available through USM for 12 contact hours.
